about Calgary...

Calgary is in the Western Canadian province of Alberta. Alberta is a global energy leader with a diverse resource portfolio which includes coal, electricity, minerals, natural gas, conventional oil, petrochemicals, renewable energy and Alberta’s oil sands. Alberta is home of the Canadian Oil Sands, the world’s second largest oil reserves, which have grasped the attention of the largest oil companies in the world, all of whom want a piece of the action. Canada is also the world's third largest supplier of natural gas reserves with Alberta accounting for 80% of Canadian production. Canada’s other major petroleum producing provinces, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, are adjacent to Alberta.

Forget Me Not Pond City Hall

Calgary is located in western Canada in the province of Alberta. It is in an area of the Foothills and prairie Grassland which blends into the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. As well, it is strategically positioned in the center of Canadian major petroleum production and distribution.

Asset development follows a long lifecycle from initial exploration to shutdown and decommissioning. Wood Group PSN brings considerable expertise to help our customers maximise the life of their assets and increase the returns they can get during that lifecycle.

We provide long-term services to our customers who are expanding into greenfield areas (new) as well as maintaining and developing brownfield (existing) oil and gas facilities.

Our customers range from international to independent operating companies. We have completed over 7000 successful projects in Canada with specific expertise in processing facilities and pipelines for crude oil, natural gas and energy.

Helping customers get the most from their assets:

Small Projects Business Units

These consist of smaller oil and gas pipelines, compression facilities, small gas plants, conventional oil treating batteries, operation and maintenance projects, additions to existing facilities, change outs/maintenance of components as well as many other activities. There are a always a multitude of small projects implemented by this Business Unit resulting in additional staff requirements.

Enhanced Oil Recovery Business

These projects termed tertiary recovery schemes, are motivated by economic considerations to recover remaining large volumes of oil from nearly depleted reserves which have not been recovered by conventional or secondary means. After waterflooding, tertiary methods such as CO2, miscible floods, polymer floods and other methods have been used to increase oil recovery. Wood Group PSN Calgary has implemented variations of Polymer floods, including Alkaline Surfactant Polymer (ASP) floods which have proven highly successful in many low recovery or depleted reservoirs. We have implemented many of these projects in recent years and have become the “go to” EPCM company for the execution of these projects. Many of these projects lead to enlargement of oil treating batteries to accommodate and process greatly increased volumes of oil, associated gas and water. Additional personnel are required to staff these projects.

Thermal Heavy Oil

Wood Group PSN has completed many projects involving field facilities, pads, pipelines and treating facilities for the recovery of heavy oil by thermal means such as SAGD and CSS. Several new projects have been acquired and there is a significant acquisition of new work in these areas. Additional staffing of all disciplines, project management, project controls and construction management is required in all areas to staff these new projects.

Natural Gas

This Business Unit includes all natural gas and natural gas liquids processing facilities and pipelines other than those included in small projects. The projects consist of both Greenfield and Brownfield facilities.
These include, but are not limited to:

  • Sweet gas processing: dewpoint control, refrigeration, cryogenic and turbo-expanders, liquids recovery, fractionation and stabilization
  • Sour gas processing:
    • Removal of larger concentrations H2S and CO2 using amines, other selective solvents, molecular sieves and membrane separation and sulphur recovery
    • Removal of lower concentrations of H2S by various batch processes such as Iron Sponge, Sulfatreat and many others.
  • Auxiliary facilities:
    • Reciprocating and centrifugal compression powered by engine/natural gas turbines or electrical power
    • Dehydration by TEG or molecular sieves
    • Acid gas removal, conditioning and injection to replace sulphur recovery
  • Pipelines and Storage:
    • Natural gas delivery pipelines, high vapor pressure (HVP) pipelines
    • NGL pipelines and all associated facilities
    • High pressure, sour high volume natural gas gathering pipelines
    • Gas storage in salt caverns or depleted reservoirs

New and ongoing projects require additional personnel to staff them.

Construction Management

This group provides services by our construction specialists who ensure that the project design is constructed according to the Project Charter. These services include:

  • Construction planning, constructability revisions, modularization, contract strategy
  • Estimating, cost control, cost reduction initiatives
  • Contract management
  • HSEQ management
  • On site construction supervision, inspection and quality control
  • Material control
  • Assistance with commissioning and start up
  • Shut down planning and maintenance

Newly awarded projects as well as ongoing commitments dictate the need for personnel to staff these requirements

Operations & Maintenance

This Business Unit provides contract operations and maintenance support services to our clients. Engineering projects initiated and identified by this service are implemented by our EPCM group. New business has resulted in the requirement for additional employees for this Business Unit.
